Lucero (to the left) is a 11 year-old creative mind who just loves steam mechanisms. Floriana (to the right), however, is a 9 year-old who prefers the contact with Nature. What a duo!

I decided to include a gameplay video this time for those who have no idea what the game is about and to show a brand new mechanic the game grew this week:

  • NEW CORE MECHANIC!!! By chaining monster kills you get a free HP point and an ever-increasing XP bonus. Exploit thoroughly.
  • NEW TILE: explosive Ernesto-detecting fungus (can be abused).
  • Level generator overhaul. Sometimes it happened that you could get 8 bats on the first level and at other times 25. I was unhappy about this so now levels make more sense. Also, I made it so there’s a chance you’ll get a power item even at beginning levels.
  • Dragon boss went through a deep rewrite. When I made the first version of this boss I thought it was the best I could do. Then after fixes and improvements I thought I reached the limit and it was okay. Now I realized how to make it even better. I am pretty proud of this boss.
  • Disguise now works with all monsters, not just Fanatics, thus it is more useful.
  • More sounds, fixes and feedback improvements.

Ernesto se ve cada día mejor. ¡Ya quiero jugarlo! :D

Ernesto is getting new graphics!

This is the first pass we are doing on the game to improve its visual communication. We want to have more detailed tiles and, at the same time, allow a better reading of the dungeon at a glance. We still have a lot of work to do, the game is feeling better…

Y’know when you have some thoughts and can’t focus on anything else until you finally put them away? Right. The whole “Gretha munches on a mushroom and she ‘grows up’ hur hur” got really demanding inside my head, so I just had to draw it.
Quite an interesting comic, too. You can read the full thing (in spanish) right here.

Yesterday I announced a new EXTRA episode of my Bits & Bytes webcomic, in which Gretha, tired of her rather flat chest, obtained the growing (hah) powers of Super Mario’s Super Mushroom.
But the provided link to the—supposedly full comic—led instead to a lovely Trollface. ^_^ Yup, just another annoying April Fools joke from Yours Truly. Don’t worry, Gretha is still a Rather-Flat-Chested-Beauty!
I loved Gretha’s expression, though.

Kero Blaster out May 11 ⊟

Drop what you’re doing and watch this. It’s the first trailer in a year for Kero Blaster, the new game from one-man Cave Story studio Pixel, and it’s looking hot.

There’s so much going on! It seems so much denser than Cave Story, but the music, graphics, and character movement all seem reminiscent. And, of course, the weapons.

This is being published in North America by Playism, on PC and iOS. It’ll be out May 11! So soon! Last year, Nicalis was teasing a 3DS version as well, but there’s no announcement of that today. Via Siliconera.
